The Local Magazine and Newspaper Index contains citations for local interest articles published in various local magazines and newspapers. These periodicals have been indexed by Richland Library staff and volunteers, and new citations are continually being added to the index. The records in this collection do not contain images or full text for the articles. To view the original materials, please visit the Walker Local and Family History Center at Richland Library.

Local periodicals available online

Various local magazines and newspapers have been digitized and made available for browsing online by different organizations. Local History librarians have curated this list of databases and digital collections that include historic local magazines and periodicals. As more local periodicals are digitized, this list will be updated to include them.

  • Accessible Archives - In addition to other materials, Accessible Archives provides access to some historical South Carolina periodicals, including The South Carolina Gazette (1732-1775), The South Carolina & American General Gazette (1764-1775), The South Carolina Gazette & Country Journal (1765-1775), and The Gazette of the State of South Carolina (1777-1780).
  • NewsBank - The NewsBank database accessible with a Richland Library card provides access to the complete run of The State newspaper as well as other South Carolina newspapers. If you do not have a Richland Library card, this database is also available through the South Carolina State Library.
  • Historic Newspapers of South Carolina - This collection from the University of South Carolina features access to digitized newspapers from throughout South Carolina dating back to the 1700s. Several newspapers from Columbia are included in this collection, including The Columbia Daily Phoenix (1865-1865), Columbia Phoenix (1865-1865), The Daily Phoenix (1865-1878), Columbia Telescope (1819-1821), The Palmetto Leader (1925-196?), The People's Recorder (1893-1925), The Southern Indicator (1903-1925), Straight-out Democrat (1878-1879), The Telescope (1815-1818), and Tri-Weekly Phoenix (1865-1875). This is a growing collection.
  • Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association - Proceedings of the South Carolina Historical Association is the annual publication of the South Carolina Historical Association. This publication has been digitized by the South Carolina State Library.
  • Sandlapper: the Magazine of South Carolina - The South Carolina State Library has digitized the popular Sandlapper magazine. This collection is browsable by date, title, and subject, and it is also searchable.
  • The Gamecock Newspaper - This site provides access to digital archives of The Gamecock newspaper covering the years 1908 to 2006. The site can be searched by issue date or keyword.
  • The Tiger Newspaper - The Tiger is the student-run newspaper for Clemson University and its community. First produced on January 21, 1907, it is the oldest collegiate newspaper in the state of South Carolina. This publication has been digitized by Clemson University.
